A general meeting of the Society is being held at St Bartholomew-the-Less, on Saturday 5th November 2016.

Programme

2.00pm – Welcome and introductory remarks, Martin Stuchfield, President of the MBS

2.05pm – An Introduction to St Bartholomew-the-Less, a parish Church and hospital chapel. Martin Dudley, Rector of the church.

2.25pm – Gift Giving and the Art of Commemoration at English Medieval Hospitals. Sheila Sweetinburgh, Associate lecturer in Medieval & Early Modern Studies, University of Kent.

2.55pm – Break, Stephen Freeth, a vice-president of the MBS available to talk informally on the Markby Brass in the church.

3.20pm – An introduction to the Wellcome Library and its early collections. Elma Brenner, the Wellcome Library’s specialist in medieval and early modern medicine.

3.30pm – Untimely ripped: childbirth and child death on brasses. Sophie Oosterwijk Hon. Research Fellow, University of St Andrews.

3.55pm – Final remarks, Martin Stuchfield, President of the MBS

4.00pm – Tea

Venue: St Bartholomew-the-Less, Giltspur St, London, EC1A 7BE is located through the Henry VIII gate of St Bartholomew’s Hospital, and the nearest Underground station is St Pauls.

Details: The church and the nearby St Bartholomew-the-Great will be open from 10.30am for those who wish to arrive early. All are welcome at this free General Meeting of the Monumental Brass Society, no booking required.
